The Culpeper Bike Bus
The Culpeper Bike Bus was a collaborative project with Culpeper County Public Schools (CCPS), The PATH Foundation, Culpeper Wellness Foundation, The Town of Culpeper and Culpeper County.
CCPS came up with a creative way to store and transport bicycles from school to school for students to learn cycling skills and safety in their PE classes. The seats were taken out of a school bus and fitted with a hanging system to house various sized bicycles and safety equipment.
The fun part was desigining a bright and playful look and feel for the exterior of the bus. Working with Xpress Copy and Graphics for the vinyl application, I created a colorful design inspired by The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour. We didn’t have a bus template to work from so we had some engineering and problem solving to do during the process.
Included in the layout are children wearing the colors of each of the participating Culpeper schools. They are happily riding along rolling hills with the Blue Ridge Mountains in the background. On the driver side of the bus, even the bus driver gets in on the bike action with a strategically placed figure below the window. The goal was to make the Bike Bus instantly recognizable when on the road or parked at one of the schools.
That’s a wrap!
